I hope I don't butcher this to much. But I am trying to find the quote and the author.

I couldn't find the one you quoted but it brings to mind the poem, Self Pity, by D.H. Lawrence:
I never saw a wild thing
sorry for itself.
A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough
without ever having felt sorry for itself.

Thank you so very much! I suspect that the quote I remember drew from this. D.H. certainly said it better . . .
