"If you want truly to understand something, try to change it."
Kurt Lewin
"What I want to fix your attention on is the vast overall movement towards the discrediting, and finally the elimination, of every kind of human excellence -- moral, cultural, social or intellectual. And is it not pretty to notice how 'democracy' (in the incantatory sense) is now doing for us the work that was once done by the most ancient dictatorships, and by the same methods? The basic proposal of the new education is to be that dunces and idlers must not be made to feel inferior to intelligent and industrious pupils. That would be 'undemocratic.' Children who are fit to proceed may be artificially kept back, because the others would get a trauma by being left behind. The bright pupil thus remains democratically fettered to his own age group throughout his school career, and a boy who would be capable of tackling Aeschylus or Dante sits listening to his coeval's attempts to spell out A CAT SAT ON A MAT. We may reasonably hope for the virtual abolition of education when 'I'm as good as you' has fully had its way. All incentives to learn and all penalties for not learning will vanish. The few who might want to learn will be prevented; who are they to overtop their fellows? And anyway, the teachers -- or should I say nurses? -- will be far too busy reassuring the dunces and patting them on the back to waste any time on real teaching. We shall no longer have to plan and toil to spread imperturbable conceit and incurable ignorance among men."
Clive Staples Lewis
"Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements."
Clive Staples Lewis
"When I was a kid, I said to my father one afternoon, 'Daddy, will you take me to the zoo?' He answered, 'If the zoo wants you, let them come and get you.'"
Jerry Lewis
"Man can acquire accomplishments or he can become an animal, whichever he wants. God makes the animals, man makes himself."
Georg Christopher Lichtenberg
"The sure conviction that we could if we wanted to is the reason so many good minds are idle."
Georg Christopher Lichtenberg
"I desire so to conduct the affairs of this administration that if at the end, when I come to lay down the reins of power, I have lost every other friend on earth, I shall at least have one friend left, and that friend shall be down inside me."
Abraham Lincoln
"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power."
Abraham Lincoln
"Winning isn't everything, but wanting to win is."
Vincent Thomas "Vince" Lombardi
"A man can be as great as he wants to be. If you believe in yourself and have the courage, the determination, the dedication, the competitive drive and if you are willing to sacrifice the little things in life and pay the price for the things that are worthwhile, it can be done."
Vincent Thomas "Vince" Lombardi
"Getting ahead in a difficult profession -- singing, acting, writing, whatever -- requires avid faith in yourself. You must be able to sustain yourself against staggering blows and unfair reversals. When I think back to those first couple of years in Rome, those endless rejections, without a glimmer of encouragement from anyone, all those failed screen tests, and yet I never let my desire slide away from me, my belief in myself and what I felt I could achieve."
Sophia Loren
"A man who wants to lead the orchestra must turn his back on the crowd."
Max Lucado
"Men make the mistake of thinking that because women can't see the sense in violence, they must be passive creatures. It's just not true. In one important way, at least, men are the passive sex. Given a choice, they will always opt for the status quo. They hate change of any kind, and they fight against it constantly. On the other hand, what women want is stability, which when you stop to think about it is a very different animal."
Eric Lustbader
"When God wants to speak and deal with us, he does not avail himself of an angel but of parents, or the pastor, or of our neighbor."
Martin Luther
"If you're not allowed to laugh in heaven, I don't want to go there."
Martin Luther
"Our whole life is an attempt to discover when our spontaneity is whimsical, sentimental irresponsiblity and when it is a valid expression of our deepest desires and values."
Helen Merrell Lynd
"Men are so simple and yield so readily to the desires of the moment that he who will trick will always find another who will suffer to be tricked."
Niccolo Machiavelli
"Inside each and every one of us is a person that no one knows. A person, should you take the time to look,is waiting to be discovered, Wanting you to take notice. Take a few minutes every day and sit down to chat to this person. Who knows what you may learn?"
Neill MacRae
"A teacher who is attempting to teach without inspiring the pupil with a desire to learn is hammering on a cold iron."
Horace Mann
"Our destiny changes with our thought; we shall become what we wish to become, do what we wish to do, when our habitual thought corresponds with our desire."
Orison Swett Marden
